Finding time to workout and spending quality time with the family can be difficult! Someone is always tired, someone doesn’t want to do what everyone else wants to do, you get the picture. instead of trying to find time in your schedule for BOTH activities, combine the two and save yourself the headache!
Here are some fresh ideas for fun family workouts. These are awesome workouts that will be easy for the whole family to enjoy.
5 Fun Family Workouts
Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing is not just for the seriously adventurous anymore. Family safe rock walls of every type are being constructed in every town it seems! Rock climbing is a great workout for children of all ages and adults of all skill levels. It requires you to use your upper, lower body, and your core for an extended period of time.
Find a rock climbing training facility where the entire family can learn to rock climb safely in an indoor environment. If organized outdoor climbs are offered, sign up for those that are suitable for all levels of climbers, or try out new walls in different facilities to always have something new to climb.
Biking
Children may already spend a lot of time on a bike, and it’s possible that most adults have not biked much since they were children. Introduce the entire family to biking as a form of exercise and adventure, rather than just as a way for kids to get around the neighborhood. Try to take up biking as a family and map out different courses ranging from easy to challenging routes!
Planning routes that go through forests, small towns, and any other interesting sights can really take your mind off the exercise part!! Plan something different for each week and increase the length of your bike ride as you go, or try camping through parks and add on an overnight element.
Canoeing
Depending on where you live, canoeing is a three season activity that can include the entire family and prove to be a real workout. Being out on the water is a new and fun activity for most people, and it’s a great way to introduce kids to water safety in a way that is fun and engaging.
Rivers, small creeks, a lake, or even a pond make a great place to begin. Rent or buy a canoe to begin, larger canoes can fit up to four family members, but it might be worth it to have two boats which gives everyone the chance to be more active and learn the ropes. Start out with small trips to build confidence and skill before planning longer trips by canoe.
Crossfit
Crossfit family workouts are our favorite! It’s a great opportunity to teach the kids good form and encourage their strength training and coordination. We’re always pushing one another to increase our reps, weight, and workouts and this carries over to healthy eating lessons.
We have a great group of friends who also workout with their children, and we make it a point to get together at least once a week to encourage and train with one another.
Hiking
The great thing about hiking is that you get to explore the great outdoors, see tons of awesome sights, and learn as you go! There is not a ton of necessary equipment for shorter day trips when hiking so it’s a cost effective, fun family workout option!
Another great thing about choosing hiking as a family workout is that you can do it anywhere! You can find lots of trails that range from easy to difficult and if there’s nothing that suits your particular desires you can always spend some time off the beaten path making your own trails!
Be sure to pack a compass, maps, and plenty of water; you can even pack a picnic lunch and make a day trip even more fun! Hiking builds stamina, endurance, and cardiovascular health all while allowing you to connect with nature and your family.
