Bowls full of labeled ingredients needed to make healthy apple crumble on top of a marble counter.
  • Apples: Apples are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other plant compounds. Of all the different type of apples available, I prefer to use Pink Lady or Honeycrisp apples. I think they’re the perfect mix of tart apples and sweet apples.
  • Honey: Honey is lower on the glycemic index than white sugar, and has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties and antioxidants.
  • Butter: Set your butter on the counter to come to room temperature before you start this recipe. Room temp butter is much easier to handle than cold butter when it comes time to mix your crumble topping.

Recipe Tips

  • If you have an air fryer lid for your Instant Pot you can air fry the top of the crumble instead of broiling it.
  • To make ahead, let your crumble cool to room temperature. For meal prep, divide your cooled crumble into 1 cup portions (will make 6 total). Store crumble in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to serve, reheat thawed crumble in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or in the microwave for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Because I am sensitive to gluten, I make sure to use gluten-free oats.
  • I try to avoid dairy but usually a little butter doesn’t bother me. But if you are vegan or strict dairy-free, use vegan butter or coconut oil instead of the butter.

Instant Pot Apple Crumble FAQs

Can apple crumble be healthy?

Relatively speaking, yes! While this recipe does use a little brown sugar and butter, most of the ingredients are whole foods. Apples are a great source of vitamins and minerals, whole grains like oats add fiber, and using honey or maple syrup as a sweetener provides extra nutrients and antioxidants.

What is a healthy alternative to butter in crumble?

I think using butter in moderation is fine, but if you’re looking for a plant-based alternative, my go-to is coconut oil.

How many calories are in an apple crumble?

This healthier crumble has 260 calories per serving.

Is there a difference between apple crisp and apple crumble?

There is! Crumble has a softer topping made from sugar, butter, and flour. Apple crisp topping is mainly oats, giving it a crunchier texture.

I choose to keep the peels on my apples – I actually like the added texture and I especially like how much quicker it makes my prep time!
If you prefer peeled apples, you can absolutely peel them first before you cook them.
