A friend was spending the night and he missed his elf, Eli! We set up a couple of syrup bottles with straws to make it look like Eli came to visit our elf, Louie! Louie left a note talking about his time with Eli. This was so exciting for the kids!

What do I do if we touched the elf on the shelf?

Don’t worry! He needs to stay in the freezer for 24 hours, but he likes it there!

Add some marshmallows with toothpicks next to him and write a note (this Elf made a mistake in her letter!). My son was devastated when he touched our elf accidentally–be sure to let the kids know it’s ok.

I used food safe markers to write on the marshmallows, but if you’re sure your little ones won’t eat the marshmallows, you could use any marker!

Did you forget to move the Elf on the Shelf last night? It’s ok!

Take advantage of those movable arms and have him point to something–anything!

The kitchen pantry? Maybe he’s hungry for breakfast!

How about sticking him in the bathroom and have him point to the sink? He’s reminding the little ones to wash their hands, of course!

Don’t stress, Mom and Dad–maybe the elf was really comfortable where he was and wanted to stay there for another day. That’s ok too!

To make sure you don’t forget your elf again, take a picture of him and use it as your phone wallpaper. It’ll be the last thing you see before you go to bed, and it’ll remind you to move him!

  1. Your elf it super cute and not at all creepy! The traditional Elf on a Shelf frightens me. :)

  2. Where did you get that elf? The “traditional” one is not nearly as cute as your little guy!!!
Please tell me where you found him!! Pretty Please!

  3. Hello! You have some great tips, maybe you can help me with my sons questions, he’s starting to ask why charlie (our elf) looks like a doll, and why his eyes never look in a different direction, he accidentally touched him also last year, and said he felt like cotton, I’m definitely running out of answers, I would love some creative ideas,

    1. I started this when our son was 4 and he immediately said “it was just a doll” I told him it was like toy story, where he looks like a toy to us but uses his magic when we aren’t around. It has worked for him for 3 years now!

  4. Help! At my 5 year old child’s preschool have an elf, they move it each night, they recently started letting the kids touch the elf. My daughter was devastated! Ok course I am angry and want to let the teachers know how I feel about that! We love our Elf tradition and I feel like the senseless teachers at this school are ruining it for my daughter. She DID NOT touch the elf but she was distraught about the other kids touching the elf and told me the teachers stood by and allowed it. We put our elf out of reach at home so she never accidentally touches her! What should I do?

    1. I know this is late but I hope you talked to the teachers. They are to be an extention of you, so you should always try to be on the same page in ad much as possible. You have every right to ask the teachers that you all be a team and let them know this is hurting your child. Imagination is super important for all areas of learning.

  5. Elf on the shelves are REAL 100%.
