A fun gift idea for someone about to get braces!

We have… braces!

Gift Idea For someone about to get braces

Well, bottom braces and a top retainer.

The week before his appointment, he got this bag o’ goodies from Mom and Dad:

A fun gift idea for someone about to get braces!

Beef jerky, Skittles, caramels, a Snickers bar, Starburst, and bubble gum – all things he wouldn’t be able to eat for the next 18 months while he’s got the braces on his teeth.

Here’s the pdf for the sign I glued to the bag:

I know that a bag full of sticky candy isn’t the healthiest gift, but it’s not something that happens often around our house. Michael was excited to have a few things that he wouldn’t be able to eat anymore, and I was happy to share with him :)

Getting braces on was pretty easy for Michael, and I think it had to do with him only needing bottom braces. The retainer on the top is pushing his teeth back, but it’s not tearing up the inside of his mouth like the braces are.

  1. My little brother got braces around the 4th of July. He just got them tightened last week. The hardest thing is keeping him from eating taffy, jerky, gum, and other mentioned foods that you should avoid.

Good luck keeping him from sneaking food.

    1. Oh no! I am not looking forward to the tightening part.

We have been super lucky with Michael so far – keeping my fingers crossed he doesn’t sneak anything!!

  6. Awww… I didn’t need braces, but I think my daughter will. They look good on him!

    1. Thank you, Stefanie! I think so, too – but I might be a little biased.

  7. Such a tough, painful time… but he will be so happy he had them. I don’t like giving a lot of candy either, but this seems like a good opportunity for a little treat. ;)

    1. I know, right? I feel bad, but it’s funny because it seems to be the norm at his school – tons of kids have them. And I liked being able to spoil him a little :)

    1. Thank you, Allison! He was pretty excited :)

  8. I won’t let my boys read this, S2 WANTS braces and your goody bag would convince him of that even more.

    What a sweet idea. :)

    1. That cracks me up – does he know how much they hurt?!

  9. My 7 year old is wearing braces right now! My nearly 11 year old already wore them as well and will have to get them on again soon. I’m hoping to get him Invisalign next time around, because he really hated wearing his braces so much. Your dude looks super happy though!

    1. 7?! That seems so little! Invisalign is so much better. We tried to talk Michael into it, but he wanted what everyone else in school had. Crazy, huh?!

  10. Very fun idea – helps him to know you’re there to support him all the way. I’m pinning your idea on my Braces Fun board.

  11. Hi there, we live in NZ, my 13yr old son just got full mouth braces yesterday, feeling sore last night its now 9.30am and I think he’s going to be asleep for awhile yet (thank god they were fitted on a Friday!).Never gave any thought to the food side of things…wish I had seen your site earlier…would have stocked up on goodies for Boy. Didn’t even think of buying him his fave takeaways in a very large portion size for lunch before his appointment…my bad…I put it down to racing round at work beforehand! I’m hoping the pain doesn’t last too long…he’s grumpy at the best of times:). Off to the supermarket to stock up, plus will get him some “braces-friendly” goodies for his post-braces bag with your sticker on it…thanks for your site and if anyone has any tips at all to guide Boy and I through the first few days and onwards…I would love to hear any ideas please

    1. Oh no! I’m sorry he’s not doing well right now. The good news is that he should be back to normal in a few days. I made homemade smoothies, Sprite slushies (with sprite and ice), and stocked up on Jell-O and pudding for my son. I’ll be thinking of you guys!

      1. Hi Becca that’s a good idea with Slushies…going to give that a go, and yes….puddings which made me think of Chocolate Mousse so that will b e going into shopping basket too. My son says he feels like an old woman who has no teeth and has to eat mushy foods! Only out of the mouth of Boys…thanks for your reply and ideas:)
